"The 80% Discount Dilemma: Seeking a Faster Checkout Solution"

🧮 The Core Issue: Manual 80% Discount Calculations

Calculating 80% off manually during peak checkout times is a bottleneck. It’s not just about math speed; it’s about maintaining flow and fairness for all guests. Here’s what’s happening:

  • 80% off = 20% of the original price, which means you’re multiplying the item price by 0.2.

  • But doing this on paper or a separate calculator while juggling other tasks is inefficient and stressful.

🛠️ Suggested Solutions

1. Register Enhancement Request

I am advocating for a register function that automatically applies the 80% discount.

I am seeing consistent delays and guest frustration due to manual calculations of employee 80% discounts. A dedicated register function—similar to existing promo keys—would streamline this process, reduce errors, and improve guest experience.”

Even a shortcut key or a preset discount button labeled “EMP80” for clarity.

2. Temporary Workaround: Discount Cheat Sheet

Or I propose updating and reposting that sheet with common item prices and their 80% discount equivalents. For example:

Original Price80% Off Price
$1.00$0.20
$2.50$0.50
$5.00$1.00
$10.00$2.00
$15.00$3.00

This visual aid could be laminated and kept at each register for quick reference or just given out to cashiers having problems calculating it efficiently manually. The previous manager was helpful enough to me personally in this problem to "laminate" the visual key, of which I still carry in my pocket, however, like I have stated it does not cover the 80% discount, only goes to the 70% discount rates.

3. Clarify the Policy

Is this a shrink-related exception, a corporate-led perk, or a store-level decision.

  • Is this discount officially approved by corporate?

  • Are there specific items or timeframes when it applies?

  • Should it be logged or tracked differently?

Knowing the origin and boundaries of the policy helps everyone stay consistent and accountable.

🗣️ Communication and Team Support

I am not alone in this, and that’s important. I have heard through the grapevine here that other cashiers are struggling too.

“Several of us are finding it difficult to calculate the 80% discount quickly during busy shifts. Could we explore a register update or a visual aid to help streamline this?”
