Proposal: Add an 80% Discount Function to the Register
Background: Currently, calculating an 80% discount requires manual steps using a calculator and paper. While some employees may perform this mentally, others—myself included—find it challenging to hold all figures in mind without visual support. This increases the risk of undercharging, which could result in revenue loss.
Challenges Identified:
Manual calculation takes time and interrupts workflow.
Mental math without paper increases error risk.
Inconsistent accuracy across employees.
Lack of training on potential built-in register functions.
Suggested Solution:
Add a dedicated “80% discount” button or programmable function to the register.
If such a function already exists, provide training or documentation to ensure all employees know how to use it.
Benefits:
Faster transactions.
Improved accuracy and consistency.
Reduced cognitive load for employees.
Protects company revenue, reduces loss and/or shrinkage
80% Discount Procedure

Locate the original purchase price on the screen.
Write the original price clearly on paper.
Step 2: Calculate the Discount
Multiply the original price by 0.80 (This gives the amount to subtract)
Step 3: Record the Discount Amount
Write the result of the multiplication on paper.
Step 4: Determine the New Price
Subtract the discount amount from the original price $$
Write the new price clearly on paper.
Step 5: Apply the Override
Tap Price Override on the register.
Type in the new discounted price.
Step 6: Confirm and Proceed
Ensure the override is accepted.
Continue with checkout or next item.
K (cashier) and Retail Manager can do this mentally; both have been in this workplace over 5 years
I’m learning this skill over time, my time in this workplace started Feb. of this year.
For now, this card will help me stay accurate and consistent.
My goal: reduce delay, build confidence, and eventually calculate without the card.
