Starbucks is currently undergoing a major restructuring that includes both layoffs and store closures:
🔁 What's Happening
Layoffs: Starbucks is cutting approximately 900 corporate roles as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan.
Store Closures: The company is closing around 400 stores across North America, which represents about 1% of its total locations.
📉 Why It's Happening
Starbucks has faced six consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines, prompting CEO Brian Niccol to launch a turnaround strategy called “Back to Starbucks”.
The plan includes redesigning store interiors, reworking menus, and making the ordering experience more personal.
Stores being shut down are those that don’t meet customer expectations or aren’t financially viable.
📍 Where Closures Are Happening
Starbucks hasn’t released an official list, but employees have begun crowdsourcing closure data via Reddit and shared spreadsheets.
So far, over 520 locations have been flagged as closed or closing, including 59 unionized stores.
Some cities, like Baltimore, have already seen multiple closures, sparking local protests and picketing.
