I had a wonderful time engaging with guests today, but dealing with all the bosses on the floor was a completely different story. This time it was Susan again.
We have four types of bags: the small bag, the next‑size‑up bag, the small tote, and the large tote. The only bag everyone seems to agree is “acceptable” is the one the customer has to buy — then suddenly everyone is satisfied.
For the guest I just checked out, I chose the next‑size‑up bag. Everything she purchased fit perfectly. These weren’t garments, just several small items, and I knew that bag was the right choice.
But while I was reaching for it, Susan stood over me, hung a tote bag on one of the knobs, and said, “No, use this one.”
All I could think was: Why don’t you get out on the floor and help another guest instead of hovering over me and micromanaging which bag I use for the guest I am servicing at this moment of time. If I need your opinion or help, I will call for you.
I have never seen so many bosses in one place, and every single one of them seems convinced they’re the ultimate authority over me.
Funny thing is last boss (Melody) told me not to use the tote bags, but use the size down from the tote bags.
I have to say if these people would busy themselves more trying to watch for shoplifters out in the store, trying to engage with guests on the floor instead of eyes peeled upon everything I am doing, trying to control and order me around, perhaps my days would be brighter in this place.
It seems to me like the ultimate bag choice belongs only to the bosses on the floor, never the person who is doing the bagging, or is this place more of "my way or no way." The bosses here are telling me: My choice is always superior to your choice no matter what choice you make.
